About Brian S
My husband Brian was diagnosed with prostrate cancer in 2015 at age 52. At first we cried then we went about finding out all treatment options and decided surgery at Northwestern University Hospital was his best chance for long term survival. A few months after his initial diagnosis my mom had what we thought was a slight stoke but turned out to be a much more serious uncontrollable brain bleed. My poor husband selflessly postponed his surgery so I could focus on caring for my mom. After almost 6 months of putting it off we finally scheduled his surgery. A week before his surgery was scheduled my mom passed away, two days later a call came that was completely unexpected. My 44 year old brother had a massive heart attack and died! I decided I couldn’t let my husband push the surgery back again, he was scared and the doctors had warned that if the cancer broke out of the prostrate It would be much worse. I was terrified in the waiting room all alone for what seemed like an eternity. I heard my name called on a speaker and I was directed to room where I was told the doctor would meet me. As I looked around the room I thought this is where they give bad news, so when the surgeon walked in I burst into tears! He calmed me down and told me my husbands surgery had gone text book. When I explained what I had gone through that week the poor man had tears in his eyes. He realized how terrified I had been of losing my husband after losing most of my family in a week. There were lots of ups and downs in the weeks and months that followed but we were strong for each other. My husband is a young man and that’s why we chose the most aggressive treatment but our fears of the side effects were enormous. He suffered incontinence, and it’s been a long road for our sex life but now nearly three years later I’m happy to report that everything has returned to almost normal and best of all he is still cancer free. I needed his support almost as much as he needed mine and next year we will God willing celebrate our 30th anniversary! We went on a trip last year to celebrate his 2nd year cancer free!
