About Steven An, PhD
Dr. Steven An is Associate Professor of Oncology, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, and Environmental Health & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. An’s long-term research interest lies in understanding the mechanisms of cancer metastasis. He has spent the last 5 years collaborating with a number of leading cancer investigators at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and, in doing so, has made significant strides in understanding the physical basis for metastatic-invasion of individual cancer cells. Dr. An has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on several NIH-funded grants and has been an active member of the cross-disciplinary research teams that include Johns Hopkins University faculty from the School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, the In-Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Center, the Physical Sciences-Oncology Center, and the Brady Urology Institute.
Through the lessons learned from different collaborative projects under the rubric of ‘physics in oncology,’ Dr. An proposes an entirely new conceptual framework in which the evolution of physical forces in prostate cancer can be traced to the ‘sensory’ array of chemoreceptors in the human body.
