About Michelle G.
I nominate my Mother, Sherron Badgett, as the caregiver who keeps on giving! My Dad was diagnosed with PC 7 years ago at age 55. Too young by most standards. They were looking forward to retiring together after working since they were teenagers. But now, living from one treatment to another has changed them. It’s has changed all of us. It is my Mom’s Faith and positivity that pulls us through.
My Mom continued to work as a preschool teacher until just recently, all the while taking my Dad to treatments and being his main caregiver. She retired last summer after 24 years of service. A natural caregiver, she raised 3 daughters, 6 grandchildren, and hundreds of preschoolers. She has made an impact on so many lives but none more than my Dad’s. She has been tireless and selfless and ALWAYS makes my Dad feel like life is normal. Which as it turns out is very important, especially to my Dad. He has never wanted special attention or a fuss made over him.
My Dad has always been healthy, active, happy and super-fun! It’s been hard to see my parents’ lives change so much. Not only has my Mom sacrificed her time but her own health, as she’s been in the hospital several times in the last 2 years for stress and exhaustion.
I have sat and cried with her. We have read numerous articles together and researched PC and treatments. I have shopped for Depends, latex gloves and cleaned bathrooms with her. We have cried together when my Dad cries, because he can’t hold new grand babies for days on end because of nuclear treatments. Last spring my Dad started chemo. The last 9 months have been hard on him…and the process continues.
My Mom is the most giving and strongest woman I have ever known. I’m praying for strength and healing and peace for all of us. In the last 7 years my parents have seen 2 daughters married and 4 new grandchildren. The work the Prostate Cancer Foundation has done has enabled my Dad to witness these blessings and we are all so thankful.
