My husband was diagnosed 11 years ago at age 68 with a very aggressive prostate cancer. His Gleason score was 9 and already in some of the lymph nodes. He had been faithful about getting his PSA test every year. Without the physicians at Penn State Health in Hershey, PA, we know he wouldn’t be here today. His treatment began with 8 weeks of image-guided radiation. His diagnosis is hormone resistant metastatic prostate cancer. Over the years, he has been treated with all available drug therapies, hormone medication, injections for strong bones, etc.. He has tried three different chemo-therapies in the past year. He is presently trying another oral therapy while receiving more frequent blood transfusions due to anemia. His scans and latest blood work confirm that he has more metastasizing, along with an increase in lesions in his lungs and lymph nodes. Amazingly, he doesn’t have a lot of pain. We are now taking one day at a time. The doctors are running out of tools from their toolbox. We did celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary in September. We have and continue to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation. I have kept a journal since day one while we’ve been on this long journey. We are just so thankful that we have a Cancer Institute practically in our backyard. With our doctors, nurses, support staff, and prayers, we keep on keeping on.
