About Sara O.
We are just beginning our journey. My step father was diagnosed with prostate cancer maybe a couple months ago. My mother said “we will figure it out when we get there” so, we are figuring it out. The latest scan revealed it is contained and surgery should be the best result. Seems pretty straight forward, yet my step father is struggling with the idea of relearning to use the bathroom as he is an independent and active man in his 70’s. We will figure it out when we get there. Now there is some background with the disease known as cancer in our family. After my oldest daughter lost her father, I reunited with mine only to find that within a couple years he would be diagnosed with multiple mylenoma. He passed away after heart complications while on chemo. About a year later, I married my husband and have 2 more wonderful children. Not long after, My husband’s father was diagnosed with lung cancer. His decline was unbearable to watch. I find myself reliving these memories of losing these male figures and feeling the heartbreak for my children at the possibility of reliving this again. Now, I am not going to pretend I have a really close relationship with my step father, but my children adore him. Going for rides on the tractor, tapping the trees for sap to make maple syrup, chuckling about the latest bee sting from the hives and reading book after book aloud while sitting on his lap. We visit at least a couple times a month, doing what we can to feel the peace of the land and offer a helping hand. Chatting with mom to see what’s new and usually making something delicious with her. We all find so much joy. Our story isn’t unique. We are just trying to figure it out….when we get there.
