About Tony N.
My story about my wife Anne, my caregiver, doesn’t start with my diagnosis of prostate cancer. My wife of thirty-eight years has been my caregiver my entire married life. You see she has been there for me through so many illnesses and injuries. She has been there through my 54 emergency room visits whether it was any of the broken bones I had or the ICU stays. She has been there for a burst appendix, a torn pancreas, a nearly month-long hospital stay for a toxic chemical poisoning. She took care of me for a year and a half while I suffered from undiagnosed Brucellosis. I also have severe food allergies and inevitably I will be served something wrong at a restaurant and she will get me to the hospital. She plans every trip with great care to ensure that I will be able to find something to eat, even looking up the translation of my food allergies in foreign languages and writing them on a card to hand to the waiters. So, maybe it was easier for her to move quicker than some caregivers into a diagnosis of prostate cancer and take an active role in this journey. She made a point to come to all the doctor’s appointments and ask the questions that maybe the stunned and nervous me would forget to ask. She helped set up the appointments and changed her scheduling to make sure she was there for me. She spent hours searching for the options for treatment and was very supportive of my decision to remove my prostate. We are living with the outcomes of surgery and adjusting to what that means. So as we move along in this I am bolstered by her love and support and every night as we lay in bed we reach over to hold hands and tell each other I love you.
