About Joanna L
We met online at an online dating site, ten days later, Kevin and I both removed ourselves from the site. We both decided we would further our relationship without involvement from others. I explained to Kevin, I wanted to be exclusively his and he felt the same way. Early on in our 1,955 miles away relationship (distance dating) Kevin shared with me his journey with prostate cancer several years earlier. Diagnosed in 2001 Kevin had undergone a radical prostatectomy, had chemo, radiation and other surgeries. Kevin’s ability to be very open and honest with me just drew me closer to him. We would talk late into the wee morning hours about our hopes our dreams, the future and cancer. I knew that Kevin’s condition, his diagnosis was becoming mine as well. I would ask him to bring me with him to doctors appointments and bone scans at the hospital via phone. I can honestly say that accompanying Kevin to the various medical appointments created a bond between both of us..Kevin opened up to me about his personal life and how prostate cancer had changed his life but that it wasn’t his life. I explained to Kevin that no one should face cancer alone, that I wanted to be his person and that his journey was now my journey as well. I spent countless hours online researching so I would better understand this special man in my life. Christmas day 2019, Kevin proposed to me and I said Yes! We’ve been married since New Years Day 2020 and “our” prostate cancer journey continues. Kevin received a Zoladex injection last week and had a CT scheduled mid February. Although I can’t be physically with my husband for these appointments, I will be there by his side every step of the way by phone or Facetime. I will be relocating within the next few months but until then, I will do whatever possible to encourage, love and support my husband. I will be starting classes in April to become an Oncology Massage Therapist so I can better care for my husband. Open and honest communication is the key to a successful marriage. I don’t know where our journey will take us, but I do know that no matter where it may be, we will face it together because doing life together is the only way to do life. Love heals.
