Well, very few people in my family know, so I am my own caregiver. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago. Being a single dad of a pre-teenage daughter, who stresses out about illness and death, I chose to keep my diagnosis to myself.
It is not a fun battle to wage alone.
Since I am “relatively young” for a prostate cancer victim, I was advised to pursue a radical prostatectomy with nerve sparing, instead of some of the more conservative treatments. I was told that if I chose the conservative treatments, such as radioactive seed implants, or “do nothing”, that if the cancer progressed outside of the prostate, or came back, that it would be much more difficult to fight, and would potentially be more devastating.
So, here I am, prostateless, at the age of 55.
I had a DaVinci procedure done, and I only missed one or two days of work for the surgery, then worked from home for the next week or so while I healed.
I have recovered will, with only minor complications as far as sensation and incontinence are concerned. But, I have only myself for support, and that only goes so far.
I prefer to remain anonymous, if you use my story.
Thanks for caring. My situation is such that so few know, so I do not get much empathy.
