In 2007, my mom unexpectedly passed away from a rare heart condition at age 52. Meanwhile, myself (age 27 at that time) w/my 3 siblings and our spouses, cared for my father for a year while he was dying of prostate cancer. He passed away in 2008 at age 55 just 10 months after my mom passed. We all took turns each day & night bringing meals to him, cleaning, laundry, and just spending quality time with Dad. Between mourning his wife (our Mom) and knowing he was dying of prostate cancer, he remained so strong and positive. My siblings and I did, too. Early screening is key because at the age of 49, my dad went in for a physical with his doctor and they told him there was no need to check his prostate since he wasn’t 50 yet. So a couple years later he started having more issues, the cancer spread, and it was too late. Cherish each day with your parents. Much love, Holly LaFave
