About Melissa C.
Five years ago to this day, my grandfather died after more than a decade of fighting prostate cancer. He was tenacious in fighting this disease – researching his treatment options, and trying novel treatments in an effort to stay on this earth with his family for a little while longer. During this time, his wife accompanied him to his doctor appointments and treatments. She was present, supportive, and loving during even the most difficult times.
Eventually my grandfather moved into assisted living. His cancer had progressed, and it was no longer safe for him to live in his home with his wife. I visited my grandfather every other day during this time. Often he requested that I bring him dinner – he loved food and the cafeteria food was not cutting it! We enjoyed our takeout while working on jigsaw puzzles and chatting. After 8 months my grandfather passed away. I will always cherish these memories and am very thankful that we were able to spend so much time together before he left us.
