My husband was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in July of 2015 at the age of 62. I will never forget the surgeon telling us his options and whatever he chose to do he better do it NOW! He then went thru Hormone Therapy, Radiation Seed Implant and 5 weeks of External Beam Radiation. PSA was so low it was unreadable, we thought all was good and he was home free.

It was October 2017 that we got the phone call that the back pain he had was due to metastatic disease. We were in such shock to hear this news. He then went thru all the staging tests to determine the extent of the disease. He was then diagnosed with Stage IV Prostate Cancer and would be starting Chemotherapy and Radiation the next day. We had just moved away from the clinic and physicians that had previously treated him. There were local clinics but we had so much faith in the medical staff in our old town that we drove the hour and a half commute each way, including a ferry to get what we know as the best Oncology care we could ask for. Since his diagnosis he has completed 60 radiation treatments, hormone therapy and is on his 3rd Chemotherapy drug. Every month anxiously waiting for his PSA results and praying that any new painful discomfort is not that of new disease. His strength and attitude constantly amaze me. I know he hides his feelings for myself and our 24 year old son. I couldn’t be more proud of him. He is the strongest, bravest man I have ever known and I have known many cancer patients. What I haven’t mentioned is that I have worked in Radiation Oncology as a caregiver for over 30 years. It is difficult to watch anyone go through the diagnosis of cancer, but even harder when it is a loved one.
