About Maik Huettemann, PhD

Dr. Huettemann is Professor and Division Director for Research at the Center for Molecular Medicine & Genetics at Wayne State University School of Medicine. His research focus is mitochondrial bioenergetics- his work also includes cytochrome c and cytochrome c oxidase, the regulation of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation through cell signaling pathways, and mitochondria as a target for therapy and diagnostics in human diseases including ischemia reperfusion injury in the heart and brain and cancer.

Dr. Huettemann’s team studies mitochondrial function using genetic and biochemical approaches. They focus on two key components of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation machinery: cytochrome c oxidase (COX) and the small electron carrier cytochrome c (Cytc). The overall goal of their work is to understand the regulation of COX and Cytc in normal and disease conditions. This regulation in turn affects energy production, free radical generation, and apoptosis.
